Behind The Photo: Mike Graves

A feature where we ask the person who took a photo that caught our eye, to tell us the story behind it.

The backstory: Mike Graves is one of our favorite Denver artists. If you’ve been to Crema Coffee, in Rino, you’ve definitely seen this mural:

We follow Mike on instagram and noticed that one day, he put a piece of his artwork out on the street.

He posted this message, along with the above photo:

I just wanted to say thanks to all the people that have supported me in Denver. Here’s some free art … Get it!!! It’s on Broadway… Good luck.”

We were curious about the piece, as well as what led him to do give the piece away, so we shot him an email. Here is Mike’s reply:

I have always felt super lucky to have received the support from the people in Denver. I wanted to give something back to say thank you. I had the helmut around for years now and it has always been one of my favorite pieces. I thought it it a fun thing for someone to pick up. I placed it on Broadway across the street from Indyink aka Abstract Denver because they have helped me out and shown my work for almost the last ten years. I know I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for their support.”

Missed out on this snagging this piece? Us, too. Luckily, you can check out Mike’s artwork, as well as prints, here. Or check him out on instagram, here, where he posts about upcoming shows.
