TACOS TEQUILA WHISKEY
First on our list is Pinche, oh wait, we can’t call them that anymore. We have to call them Tacos Tequila Whiskey and if you don’t know why, you need to get on over there, belly up to the bar, order the best Paloma in town (great grapefruit flavor, perfectly boozy without being too sweet) and get yourself a story, along with some of Denver’s best (and, in fact, America’s Best) and most creative tacos.
DON’T MISS: They like to mix it up over there so check for specials, of which the Lobster Taco is not to be missed. The Pork Belly “Agridulce” taco; Pollo Agave with Agave-dipped fried chicken, slaw, Mexican chimichurri and the Queso a la Plancha are among our favs, but you don’t need to hesitate bringing a vegetarian or vegan here, either, as there’s an assortment of meatless options as well.
Tacos Tequila Whiskey has two locations in Denver, 3300 W 32nd Avenue and 1514 York Street. Fin more menu items, and hours, here.
Dos Santos boasts a tightly-edited menu (about six taco offerings) of really approachable, fresh and beautifully crafted tacos (have you seen their instagram?). But keep on the lookout for specials, some of which have included Cochinita Pibil ~ Achiote Marinated Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Pickled Jalapeños, Pickled Onions, Fried Cilantro (pictured).
DON’T MISS: Sesame Seed Crusted Seared Rare Ahi-Tuna, Pineapple, Habanero Salsa, Avocado, Pickled Onions, Fried Leeks and Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, when it’s on special; The Donkey Tonk breakfast burrito made with Sweet Potato Hash and Sweet & Spicy Bacon; and their Michelada made with Station 26 Brewing Co.’s Dos Santos Mexican Lager – all arguably, NOT TACOS, but still make our list of standouts.
Dos Santos is located at 1475 E 17th Ave, Denver, CO 80218. Find their hours, here.
At Tocabe, they specialize in Native American food and serve what they call Indian tacos. You’ll choose your fresh ingredient proteins, like chicken, beef or bison (pictured), which are then served on a pillowy fry-bread, only to be piled high with an assortment of veggies and sauces of your choosing. They also have their veggie customers covered with a veggie taco and Bad Hunter salad, comprised of mixed greens, nuts, grains and veggies.
Tocabe is located at 3536 W 44th Ave, Denver, CO 80211. Find their hours, here.
LA CALLE TAQUERIA Y CARNITAS
Denver Westword called La Calle Taqueria Y Carnitas “transcendent… (the kind of place) that makes you raise your fist to the heavens, having just discovered enlightenment on a plate.” We’ll just call their tacos the most authentic (the menu is all in Spanish) street tacos we’re ever tasted. This is the kind of joint chefs around town recommend, and you’ll often hear their praise for the carne asada, al pastor, beef cheek and fried tacos.
DON’T MISS: Their salsa bar is one of the most impressive you’ll ever see: Fresh cucumbers, radishes, limes, onions, cilantro, roasted jalapeños, 2 pickled onions (mild and habanero) and up to six different house-made salsas, including an Avocado Salsa Verde that will change your life.
La Calle Taqueria Y Carnitas is located at 1565 W Alameda Ave, Denver, CO 80223. Check out their hours, here.
Lola’s is always the answer when the question is, “Where do locals love to go?” Their food is inspired by the coastal regions of Mexico and you’ll find that influence in the menu offerings of grilled oysters, shrimp ceviche and ahi tuna tostaditas. But it’s the lively bar scene and amazing happy hour menu that keep the regulars coming back. Here, you can enjoy crispy fish, carne asada, achiote chicken (our fav, so juicy!), veggie, pork al pastor and beer battered shrimp tacos for $4.00 and under, at what was named one of the Top Five Places to Drink Tequila in North America.
Lola’s Coastal Mexican is located at 1575 Boulder St, Denver, CO 80211. You can find their hours, here.
Please note: Menus and pricing often change, depending on the season. Feel free to double check a business’ website to make sure certain items are still available.
